Day 7: Becoming a Mindful Eater

Philippe H.

It is no news that the mind is the thinking space of everything that goes on in the body. Putting this in perspective, the mind has to be in a good state else, our daily life could begin to spiral out of control. With the mind comes the consciousness, mental alertness, and awareness which can bring big rewards when incorporated into our eating habits.

Mindful eating simply means paying attention to the dietary combinations of the food we eat. In a report published by the Harvard Health Publishing , there is a network of hormonal involvement for metabolism and digestion to take place, otherwise metabolic dysfunctions result.

What are the causes of Unmindful Eating?

There are a number of activities we engage in while eating. These may include:

  • Browsing online.
  • Seeing a movie.
  • Eating from a large bowl.
  • Chatting animatedly.
  • Eating to numb emotions.
Certainly, this makes us eat more than we initially planned, or makes us eat rather hurriedly. Overeating, for one, has been discovered to be one of the many causes of asthma, diabetes and obesity, to mention but a few.

What are the Health Benefits of Mindful Eating?

The advantages of being mentally involved with eating cannot be overemphasized. The most essential of them is to break our bad dietary lifestyle, while others include:

  • Decreasing depression.
  • Preventing weight gain.
  • Stemming food disorders and metabolic dysfunctions, and
  • Reducing the risk of diabetes, anxiety and other chronic health problems.
Researchers have shown that people who practice mindfulness in its entirety can have better control over their life and be healthier.

How to Break the Cycle of Mindless Eating?

Mindful eating is a good health choice which can be achieved through individual responsibility. However, where it seems we just cannot help it, we may decide to become accountable to our friends and relatives. These will help you to:

  • Be in the moment
  • Notice how good your meal taste.
  • Put a lid on uncontrollable food cravings.
  • Help to manage your emotions and combine food diets in a healthier fashion.
Distraction can be a bad thing, especially when it is extended. Take the moment to fix your bad eating habits, and experience quality living.
